In Aotearoa, ethnic inequalities in oral health between Māori and non-Māori exist, with Māori having the poorest oral health outcomes of any ethic group. Te Ao Mārama is an assertion of Article II (self-determination) of Te Tiriti o Waitangi/The Treaty of Waitangi, and the NZ government has an obligation to reduce these inequalities.
